Australia is a very big country, so it is not surprising th (*) we can find many differences in weather an (1) scenery from one state to another. As well a (2) geographical and
climatic variations, th(3) is a great variety in the people wh (4) live in Australia.
Firstly, lets look a (5) the many landscapes in this vast continent. In the north of Australia, the
heavy tropical rainfall produces the wetlands o (6) Kakadu National Park. Here, you can see manyki (7) of birds, and crocodiles can also be found in lakes and riv (8). The Northern Territory is home
to a rich Aboriginal culture. Wall paintings in its caves provide evidence that Aborigines have li (9) in Australia for thousands of years. In the dry red centre of Australia, much of the land is
desert, where few people can live. The symbol of that region is Ayers Rock, also kn (10) as Uluru.
To the east, is the mainly tropical state of Queensland, famous f (11) the Great Barrier
Reef, which lies off the coast. This huge ribbon of coral at the edge of the Pacific Ocean is one of the great natural wonders of the w (12) . Further south, the climate bec (13) more temperate and it
is in New South Wales and Victoria that most wheat is grown. How (14), wool has always been the mo (15) important source of income for Australian farmers. Sheep and cattle farming are widespread in
Australia, though the country is perhaps bet (16) known for its native animals, such a (17) the kangaroo and koala. There are even snowfields in some higher southern parts of the country, th (18) the
ski season is quite short.
In ad (19) to the diversity of the land, there is considerable diversity among the Australian people. The earliest settlers we (20) the Aborigines, but, in the
last two centuries, waves of migrants from all o (21) the world h (22) made their homes here. Australia is proud of its achievements as a multicultural nation, wh(23) people are free to maintain their
own la (24) and culture and practise their own religion.
Although it is not tr (25) to say that all Australians are tall, sun-tanned surfers, sport and recreation play an important p (26)
in their lives. The mainly fine, dry climate makes it pos (27) for Australians to spend much of their free time outdoors, enjoying open-air activities. The Aussie barbeque is typical of the casual way
in which people like to get tog (28) with their friends.
People around the world who watched the opening and closing ceremonies of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games had an opportunity to see
for them (29) the many sides and faces of Australia - the land and the ocean, and the inhab (30) , old and new.
